The Yellow Submarine
The Midwest’s maritime trade dates back to the late 1800s, with exports of finfish, seals and sea cucumbers from the Abrolhos Islands. By the 1920s, the Rock Lobster industry had begun, with crayfish gaining popularity in the 1940s.
To catch the elusive green crayfish, local fishers commissioned Dongara engineer Severn Graham in 1969 to design a submarine, though both prototypes failed due to technical issues.
Later, businessman George Rowe acquired the first prototype, which became a town icon when installed at the Geraldton Maritime Museum in 1977. Repainted bright yellow, the submarine was later relocated to the Geraldton Foreshore. In 2014, it was placed in storage due to rust, and in 2020, it was donated to the Rotary Club of Batavia Coast.
Following extensive restoration works by the Rotary Club of Batavia Coast in 2024, the Yellow Submarine was gifted to the City of Greater Geraldton for public display on the Esplanade at the Geraldton Foreshore.
